Short post today. Then off to catch up on blogs. Six days left until race day!
HOLY MOTHER OF ALL THAT IS PURE!
Six days left. I’m trying not to think about it. Impossible. I’m thinking about it all the time right now. Is this normal? I feel like I should be making some major plans but right now I’m just worried I won’t wake up in time to drive to Seattle that morning.
Okay that’s not true I am making some major plans. I need to adjust my work out schedule for the rest of the week to give my legs a rest. The muscles along the shins are really sore…
Oh wait, here is a great opportunity for an anatomy lesson!! Okay so these little red delicious muscles are your Tibialis Anterior and today mine are super sore. I know why. I probably shouldn’t have run that super fast mile yesterday but I did. I had good reason. It helped clear up some frustrations and I needed that more than anything.
So now I need a game plan to help me recover. I’m going to modify my time in the gym for the rest of the week. No elliptical, no Arc trainer and as much as I hate to say it: no running for the rest of this week. I love that one mile run before each workout but unless I see some major improvement in the next 24 / 48 hours I’m putting a hold on it.
That being said, I am still going to the gym this week. Tomorrow (Wednesday), Friday and Saturday I will swim to my heart’s content. Thursday is Superman and he is aware of my upcoming run so upper body for that day.
So, any last minutes words of wisdom from my VBB(s) out there? Any advice on first run anxiety?
Speaking of Superman we had our session today. I have to steal Seattlerunnergirl’s word in order to describe the 60 minutes I spent with him:
AWESOMETASTICNESS
I lifted weights, I got to pick up and slam down a punching bag (yes the big one), I rolled around on the floor doing push-ups (girl push-ups) and leg lifts while he yelled “FRONT, BACK, GO, STOP and KEEP MOVING” at me, and I got to swing around on gymnast rings. A total party package if you ask me!
Ugh, not fair. I want gymnast rings. I’m going to start incorporating tabata squats and the CrossFit WOD into my training. I swam yesterday.
But yes, you definitely need to taper, especially if you’re sore. You should ice the sore areas, it’s helpful. As for first race anxiety, I’ll write a post about it, but seriously, just go out there and do your best and have fun. Run your heart out and make it worth it 🙂 That’s all there is to it.
You can do it!
I don’t know if you’re going to read this but race day I’m going to wear an Optimus Prime band-aid!!!!!!
Oh man, that workout sounds *so* appealing!
You will kill in this race, no worries!
Did I miss something, what race. Didn’t you just finish a half?
lol, Joe I walked that half marathon.
Sunday is my first running race.
Oh and now that you’re here Mr. Professional runner…give me some tips
Yes. I will do a post for you in the morning that may help.

I am so glad you’re planning to rest the sore bits and take it easy on the legs before your big race! I’m so excited for you! Trust me, I will have my pom poms out in full force for you this weekend. I’ll be away for work – but I will be cheering you on from there!
PS – I seriously love this new work: awesometasticness. I will steal it.
Does the pom poms include a cheerleader outfit?
Hmm – if I did have one it would be WAY too big for me, just like the rest of the clothes in my closet. lol
There’s still time to shop for outfit!!!!! GO GO GO!
True to form, here’s what I got for ya:
1. Definitely taper if you are sore;
2. Ice and/or cool baths will help;
3. Active rest will also help;
4. On race day, pee beforehand, and then pee again. Trust me.
5. Hydrate and eat a small, energy packed (but not difficult to digest) breakfast a couple hours before the race;
6. HAVE FUN!!!
#6 is my main goal!!!
I haven’t had my first race yet (that’s not till July), so I can’t give you any specific advice there. So I’ll just say go out there, have fun, do your best, and listen to your body. I’m sure you’ll do great – I can’t wait for the race report!
Hmmm maybe after Sunday I’ll have some newbie advice for you!
oh man…how exciting. I get nervous with things too.
You will do fab though.
Your workout with your trainer makes me want a trainer.
Sometimes someone else pushing will make you push harder.
Superman knows how to push. I often want to punch him at some point during our time together.
I love your attitude!!!! I can’t wait to hear how your run goes. 🙂
I can’t wait too!!!!!
Sounds like your session with superman was awesome! My words of wisdom for you is to just keep running- find the lady in the tiara and DO NOT LET THEM BEAT YOU! haha. You’ll be fine, kick ass for me tara!
I am kicking ass for all of us Miss Molly!
My only advice is ice your shins for 20 minutes. It will make a world of difference.
Good luck in the race.
I’m gonna do that tonight!
Hydrate, starting Thurs, continuing until the night before the race. Drink water, and then drink more water, regardless of the weather forecast for the race. Then when you get up race morning, pee. Then pee before you leave the house. Then again after you get to the race site. Also, don’t wear anything new (though for a 5k, it’s not as bad as a new shirt that chafes in a marathon).
Awesome advice! Thanks!
You’ve got this. You will not be the fastest or the slowest out there (I find that comforting, anyway). You’re going to be the awesome-est, though! You know what it’s going to be like at the start because of last weekend.
